lots of socks to show again, mostly short ankle socks.
at the end of the previous sock post i showed you a pair made with opal "The Little Prince and the Fox" yarn and mentioned the game of yarn chicken i was playing to get a second pair out of the rest after making a square for my blanket.
this is an entire 100g ball of sock yarn used up. you can see the tail end of the "Fox" yarn i had left before i had to change to the yellow yarn for the toe. it was maybe a little more than six or seven inches.
this is pair #112 using opal "The Little Prince and the Fox" and a solid sunflower yellow from my stash. i like to use colours that appear only very little in the printed yarn for my contrasting cuffs, heels and toes. brings them out a little more even though i don't always have an exact match in my stash...
pair #113 is a pair of Gryffindor socks i made for a friend who's a fellow Harry Potter fan. i made them in block stripes inspired by the scarves shown in the first two movies. after that they changed the design to red with narrow golden-yellow stripes - i think i'll make her a pair of these for the winter...
i made a belly band in HP-style (or at least i tried) and delivered them in true Diagon Alley fashion: wrapped in plain brown wrapping paper, tied with string.
i used this yarn by the way, but you can use any brand of yarn you like or have to make Hogwarts inspired socks (or scarves).
for pair #114 i used opal "Mein Sockendesign - ...over the rainbow..." and the pattern Tennarisukka. i gave them to one of my aunts - the one who lives all the way across the country - when she was here for a short visit at the end of may. she loves everything rainbow and was very happy with them.
pair #115 is opal Schafpate VIII "Blickfang" (eyecatcher) nr. 9206. i used the other half of the ball i had left from pair #92 i had made for my mum - because she loved the yarn so much. i made a little bubble cuff using my "cuff drops pattern" (which you can find in the right side bar under "tutorials and guides").
after that i fell headfirst into a short but intense scrahappy sock addiction:
pair #116 - i love how the right one reminds me of a landscape starting from the toe up. (5 rounds per yarn.)
pair #117 went to live with my mum. i love how boldly different they are. the right with lots of narrow stripes and the left with wider, block stripe type of stripes. i didn't do any of this on purpose though. the yarn did all the work... (5 rounds per yarn.)
pair #118 - on the whole this might be my least favourite so far but there are individual sections that i like a lot, the left heel for example, or the brown-green-teal part in the middle on the right sock. (5 rounds per yarn.)
pair #119 is the first one where i did 10 rounds per yarn instead of 5. i quite like it actually. the colour/yarn changes went so smoothly in most places that these look more than the others as if it was actually one ball of yarn rather than lots of different ones.
all of these scrahappy socks are made basically the same way and they are all exactly the same size. the only thing that makes each pair a "pair" is the colour of the roll-down edge because i usually use the same solid colour for each "pair". but these could just as well be totally mixed and matched however i want...
for pair #120 i used the other half of the rainbow yarn i had left after making socks for my aunt and i made them with the cuff drops pattern again just like #115.
for pair #121 i used opal "The Little Prince and the Lamp Lighter" which i love just as much as "The Little Prince and the Fox" and "The Little Prince's Rose". i used Drops Fabel uni 112 for the cuff, heel and toe because i had to have enough yarn left to make a pair for my husband as well. how can i resist when he puts in a request for socks in a yarn he likes...? again, i chose a solid colour to match (as much as possible) a colour that was only little used in the printed yarn. i like how the green toes and heels draw the eye to the thin, speckly lines of green in the foot of the sock...
pair #122 was for my other aunt (the one who does not live all the way across the country). the yarn is opal "Ladybug" nr. 30036. it is from a really old rainforest collection and one of the stores i know still stocks it is this one (but there may be others as well).
pair #123 are some Hufflepuff socks for myself. i chose to use dark grey yarn rather than black (even though the Hufflepuff colours are described as yellow and black in the books). i didn't want my feet to look too much like oversized hornets and i liked the yellow and dark grey they used for Newt Scamander's scarf in the Fantastic Beasts movie. i'm a proud Hufflepuff myself... (if you're a fan and haven't yet, i recommend you hop over to Pottermore.com where you can read lots of great additional stories about the wizarding world and characters by J.K.R. herself, discover your partronus, get sorted into your house and find out what your wand is made of. expect to spend quite a lot of time there...)
since we are talking about Harry Potter inspired knitwear, pair #124 is a pair of Hermione's Everyday Socks using schoppel crazy zauberball "Herbstwind" (autumn wind). i have a sort of love-hate relationship with the Hermione's pattern: i love wearing it, it makes wonderfully soft socks but at the same time i really don't enjoy actually knitting it very much...
i have made two pairs of crazy zauberball socks already, "Kleiner Fuchs" used for mojos and "Papagei" for Tennarisukka (but a long-legged version), both pattern textures created using only knit and purl stitches. i have another two crazy zauberbälle still in my stash and want to use different texture patterns for these as well.
pair #125 is a quick in-between pair of new autumn socks for R. the yarn is gründl hot socks print 517 which i've had in my stash for ever. i think someone gave it to me some time... i'm not the hugest fan of speckly variegated yarn like this and since it was only a 50g ball i thought i'd make some kid's socks and a square for my blanket. R was very excited about them when she saw i was making little socks - she can totally tell! (she frequently picks up some spare dpns, sits down somewhere and moves them around as if she was knitting. it's so adorable but i think it's too soon to actually teach her to knit...) i had to keep her from putting the socks on right away because it must have been about 35°C on the day i finished them. i added a few purl rounds on the leg of a little texture...
pair #126 is my husband's pair of "Lamp Lighter" socks. they would have been done sooner had i not run out of the green Drops Fabel uni yarn. i ordered some more and it took forever to arrive... i made them with a heel flap and turn as the short row heel i usually do does not fit my husband very well. he loves them which makes me very happy.
pair #127 is yet another pair of scrahappy socks. i started these with the intention of giving them away but then i loved them so much that i just had to keep them. i did seven rounds per yarn this time and this has to be the "matchiest" pair of these that i have made so far. i still stuck to my "rule" or "method" - i don't really know what to call it - of picking out a new yarn that starts in a similar colour to the one the old one ended with, but i picked out the colours more carefully, making sure that there would not be any colours i didn't want in the socks too soon. i wanted to stick with orange-brown-reds and blue-teals. the occasional hints of green and lilac were okay too.
pair #128 is exactly the same as #98 (green with magenta) and #107 (orange with petrol). i used Drops Fabel "pink dream" 161 and the type of paleish yellow i like to call "chick yellow". it matched the few thin yellow lines in the pattern and also it was the only solid yarn i had in my stash that was pale enough to go with the Fabel. the rest of my solid colours are rather more on the bright side...
currently i have a pair of grey striped socks for my husband on the needles and a stack of crochet squares on my desk that await joining (the yarn for that is on its way to me). i've also finished two more rows of my sock yarn blanket but that still needs photographing (which is getting harder and harder the bigger it gets). i'll share that with you soon.
lots of love for now and i hope you have a great time, whatever you're doing! xxx
