this is where i left off last time - nine rows, twelve squares each. i must say that i always enjoy looking at pictures of my blanket spread out like this. i hardly ever see it like this any more because it's getting really big. it's supposed to be 12x16 with a narrow border in a dark colour when it's all finished.
these are the two new rows and there are quite a few doubles in there... i've sorted through my leftovers (again and again) very carefully, looking at the colourways and the squares i had already made to find yarn that i could use again without the squares looking too much the same. i found quite a few, especially some of the minis from the calendar, that worked well. i went a little nuts and took pictures of all the squares i'd used the same yarn for, painstakingly number-coding them in my file... don't ask me why.
also don't ask me why i don't just grab a scrap at random and use it - i could not really tell you... (although i think i've tried in one - or maybe a few - of the other blanket posts. sorry if i'm repeating myself...)
eleven rows done!
it's looking a little wonky but it's almost impossible to lay it out with the edges all neat and straight. i think it will straighten out once it has a border and if it doesn't it's fine too - it will be all flat like this next to never and it will be for snuggling under on the sofa. it is being used for that already actually, rows half done and tail ends hanging out...
i made some more squares using the magic ball of yarn. i love it. i never know what i get and i like sorting though my tiny leftovers and arranging the order in which i join them.
these are the two magic balls i'm currently "working on" or "with". i like to join ends in similar colours and if i don't have ends that match i'll just wait until i have more...
now, i showed you the first of these squares already, but look at the beginning and the end of each one and you'll see that they really come from the same ball of yarn:
i love my magic squares...
the "sequence" with these will not continue though because i've added some new scraps to the ball. i'll use the smaller one of the two shown above for a new square soon. can't wait to see what colours will appear!
i've just noticed that the fabric of some of the squares looks sor of wobbly up close... that's because some of the yarns (especially the smaller leftovers) have been knitted and frogged already. they will relax and accept their new shape once the blanket gets a spa treatment when it's finished. also the joins are thicker than the rest of the yarn which makes the stitches look a little distorted because they are bulkier. that will settle itself too in time and with use.
now i have one more thing to show you:
we recently set up a doll house for R in an open shelf and i made these two mini sock yarn blankets for the beds. i think they turned out just adorable and she is very happy with them. she inherited some of the old doll house furniture my sister and i used to play with. i don't know exactly how old these pieces are but i think my mum's younger sisters already played with them - or something... i have to ask her about it...
as much as i love some of the modern doll house designs, there's nothing like doll house furniture with a little history. now i have to make some mattresses that actually fit the beds - the ones you see in the picture stick out everywhere and double as pillows as well. the dolls sleeping in the beds are little rabbit dolls R got from her grandma. she loves them and plays with them more than with the human dolls.
have a good week everyone, stay safe and healthy and enjoy whatever you're doing! xxx
